Manali – Leh Cycling Expedition
The Manali–Leh cycling expedition is one of India’s great endurance rides, taking cyclists from the green valleys around Manali into the stark high-altitude landscapes of Ladakh.
Overview
The Manali–Leh cycling expedition is one of the most iconic high-altitude cycling journeys in the Himalayas, linking the green valleys of Himachal Pradesh with the stark mountain landscapes of Ladakh. Over several days, the road climbs steadily into thinner air, passing glacial rivers, barren plateaus and isolated settlements before reaching Leh.
The route crosses some of the journey’s defining landmarks, including Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Gata Loops, Nakee La, Lachulung La, the More Plains and Tanglang La. Several sections rise above 5,000 metres, where long climbs, cold winds and reduced oxygen make even gentle gradients physically demanding.
What makes the expedition special is the constant change in landscape. Forested valleys give way to rugged mountains and vast high-altitude plains, while remote camps and roadside settlements become part of the experience. It is a demanding ride that rewards careful acclimatisation, steady pacing and strong endurance with one of the most memorable cycling routes in the Indian Himalayas.
