Langtang Valley Trek
Trek through forests and traditional Tamang villages into a spectacular glacial valley beneath the Langtang Himal, finishing at Kyanjin Gompa with optional climbs to nearly 5,000-metre viewpoints.
Overview
The Langtang Valley Trek follows a deep Himalayan valley north of Kathmandu, beginning in dense forest before gradually opening into a landscape of yak pastures, stone villages and high alpine country. One day the trail is enclosed by bamboo and rhododendron, the next it is running beneath snow-covered peaks.
Beyond Langtang Village, the valley broadens dramatically as the trail approaches Kyanjin Gompa, surrounded by glaciers and high ridges. From here, side trips to Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri offer some of the finest views of the trek, with Langtang Lirung and the surrounding Himalayan range rising close above the valley.
What gives Langtang its character is its intimacy. The mountains feel near, the villages are small, and the route moves quickly from forested foothills into a distinctly high-altitude world.
Typical Itinerary
Syabrubesi → Lama Hotel - 11 km
Enter Langtang National Park and follow the river through bamboo and rhododendron forest climbing from roughly 1,500 m to around 2,500 m.
Lama Hotel → Langtang - 14 km
Continue through the forest toward Ghoda Tabela before the valley begins to open dramatically.
Langtang → Kyanjin Gompa - 6–7 km
A shorter day allows more time for acclimatisation. The terrain becomes increasingly alpine as you approach Kyanjin Gompa.
Tserko Ri - 8 km or Kyanjin Ri - 4 km
This is the major optional summit/viewpoint day. You can either trek to Tserko Ri (4984 m), recommended option for fit, well-acclimatised trekkers, or to Kyanjin Ri (4773 m), which is the easier alternative.
Kyanjin Gompa → Lama Hotel - 20 km
Retrace the valley, descending through Langtang Village and forest.
Lama Hotel → Syabrubesi - 11 km
Continue descending along the Langtang Khola. Stay in Syabrubesi or begin the return journey depending on transport.
Best Time To Go
Before You Go
Langtang Valley gains altitude quickly from Syabrubesi to Kyanjin Gompa, so pace yourself and keep the high viewpoint climb for after a night at Kyanjin. Expect cold conditions above 3,500 m and rapidly changing mountain weather. Carry appropriate travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
