Overview

Just beyond Kohima, steep forest trails rise into a landscape of rolling green folds, bamboo-covered slopes and clear mountain streams. In summer, the valley is scattered with wildflowers, including the rare Dzükou lily, found only in this region.

Dzükou itself sits at roughly 2,450 metres, a broad, quiet basin where trails disappear between grassy ridges and low bamboo. The journey becomes more demanding on Japfü Peak, which rises to about 3,048 metres and is Nagaland’s second-highest summit. Dense vegetation and a steep ascent eventually give way to wide views across the surrounding hills and towards Kohima.

What stays with you is the contrast: the softness of Dzükou’s rolling valley against the rugged climb of Japfü. Mist, forest, seasonal flowers and seemingly endless green ridges give the trek a character unlike the high, rocky Himalayas farther west—a quieter journey through one of Northeast India’s most distinctive mountain landscapes.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1

Kohima → Viswema → Dzükoü - 7–9 km

Drive south from Kohima toward Viswema. From Viswema, climb through forest to the ridge and then continue along an easier contour trail through dwarf bamboo toward the valley. Stay at the trekkers' rest house or approved camping area.

Day 2

Explore Dzükoü Valley

Spend the day exploring the interior of the valley. Descend from the ridge into the basin and follow streams between the rolling bamboo-covered hills. During flower season, this is the day to explore areas where the Dzükoü Lily and other seasonal flowers occur.

Day 3

Dzükoü → Jakhama / Viswema → Kigwema

Leave Dzükoü in the morning. You can either return via Viswema or descend using the steeper Jakhama approach, depending on current trail conditions and your guide's recommendation. Drive to Kigwema, the practical base for Japfü. Stay in a homestay around Kigwema.

Day 4

Kigwema → Japfü → Kigwema - 9 km

Start very early for the summit climb. The trail rises through dense vegetation and rhododendron forest toward the summit ridge. The upper sections are considerably steeper and more rugged than the walking in Dzükoü. Return to Kigwema.

Day 5

Kigwema → Kohima

Return to Kohima. This final day can also be used to visit nearby Kisama Heritage Village or Kohima before departure.

Before You Go

The Dzükoü–Japfü combination is relatively low in altitude but involves steep forest trails, basic accommodation and sections where navigation can be difficult. Dzükoü currently requires a registered local guide, while Japfü is also best attempted with local guidance because dense vegetation can obscure the trail. During summer and monsoon months, expect mud, rain and leeches.
